  • Former location of Saint Mary's Academy, Lloyd Billingsley (guest) wrote 12 years ago:
I lived near the Academy and would hang around there as a child. As I noted in my memoir Our Time After a While, some kids would put cigarettes in the mouths of Virgin Mary statues in the grotto. I believe I heard of Sister Philomena and some others. That some of these women were less than stellar does not detract from the magnificence of the building, which should have been preserved. It rendered a timeless feeling that has now disappeared.

Dr. Ron Ianni was an president of the University of Windsor. During this time I got to know Dr. Ianni where I could referr to him as Ron. He and my dear father died of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclersois). I miss this man very much.

I went to St Marys Academy in Windsor from around 1960 to 1963, it was the most terrible place; it was a hell hole. A nun named Sister Philomena was over us girls and she was the meanest, most wicked and evil woman and she definitely was a child abuser. She regularly beat, hit, and abused me, she expected that children should not move in their beds at night and if she heard a movement she would get up and pinch and hit. She was unfit to take care of children and she definitely did not fit the description of a Christian. One of my friends that went to that place was regularly beaten by her because she missed her mom. I wish I could meet with Sister Philomena face to face today and tell her off. Today she would be prosecuted for the things she did and get prison time. No wonder the Catholic Church has been sued and still being sued for the things that happened to children. Thank you,

CBE-AM is moving to the FM band as CBEW-FM 97.9... better audio quality and coverage in downtown windsor and Detroit... but no more "clear channel" status (its AM signal on 1550 can be heard across much of eastern North America at night)

Not a neighbourhood or official designation of the area. Silver City is only the name of the movie theater complex in the area.
  • François Baby House - Windsor Community Museum, ShawnM wrote 13 years ago:
This house was also commandeered by British forces in the war of 1812. Earth works were installed, and cannons placed. From here, a small cannon battle took place between the fort across the river, and the house. The British officers made men circle the house many times to make it seem like there were more British soldiers than there really were.
  • Zalev Brothers Scrap Yard, Magnatomicflux wrote 13 years ago:
The Roundhouse Center wasn't just some stripmall that came out of nowhere. It was a major, and very large rail terminal for the Michigan Central / Canada Southern railways. 90% of what Zalev is located on today was a former railyard.

Shame the man who bought this property in 1912 tore such a historic place down to make room for 'new' housing developments. It is a great loss for the city. It should be rebuilt, and made into a museum with proper river front lands granted.
